    Daesh: kebangkitan dan pengaruh media sosial

    Abad ke 21 menyaksikan video dan media sosial menjadi senjata perangsaraf terbaru kumpulan militan untuk membina pengaruh, pengrekrutan dan mengukuhkan ideologi mereka di rantau ini. Selain itu, video dan media sosial juga digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk membuat ancaman terhadap negara-negara yang tidak bersetuju dengan kewujudan mereka. Penggunaan video dan media sosial secara profesional oleh kumpulan militan ini adalah satu fenomena baru. Kesannya, Malaysia kini di ambang kebimbangkan ekoran ancaman demi ancaman dari kumpulan militan Asia Tenggara seperti Daesh yang mahir menggunakan teknologi maklumat untuk memenangi peperangan ideologi. Walaupun keadaan masih terkawal namun langkah keselamatan ketat sentiasa menjadi keutamaan kerajaan Malaysia. Kajian ini melaporkan bentuk keupayaan kumpulan militan Daesh dalam melancarkan perangsaraf menggunakan video dan media sosial ke atas rakyat dan kerajaan Malaysia untuk dua tujuan berbeza iaitu pengaruh dan ancaman. Walaupun jelas kerajaan menguasai keseluruhan agensi berita dan media arus perdana, namun penyebaran maklumat dalam bentuk video di media sosial menjadi cabaran baru kepada Malaysia. Analisis laporan berita terkini menjadi punca rujukan utama yang terkini. Buku dan jurnal berwasit juga telah digunakan bagi mengukuhkan kredibiliti kandungan. Kesimpulan yang diperolehi dari kajian ini mendapati Malaysia masih lagi mencari formula, model dan pelan tindakan yang sesuai bagi membasmi ancaman video Daesh yang bermaharajalela di media sosial. Kajian juga mendapati akar kepada punca ancaman ini masih belum dapat dipatahkan oleh agensi bersenjata dan undang-undang sedia ada kerana pusat media yang menghasilkan video Daesh tidak berada di Malaysia sebaliknya berada di kawasan konflik seperti di Iraq dan Syria. Akhir sekali, kajian juga mendapati, laporan berita dari media arus perdana yang menggunakan platform media sosial memainkan peranan sebagai pemangkin tidak langsung kepada penyebaran ideologi Daesh

    The Effect of Using Reflective Teaching Strategies on Developing Classroom Performance of Prospective Teachers of English at Al-Aqsa University

    هدفت هذه الدراسة إلى بحث أثر استخدام استراتيجيات التدريس التأملي على تطوير الأداء الصفي للطالبات المعلمات، تخصص اللغة الانجليزية. ولقد تبنت الدراسة المنهج شبه التجريبي. وتكونت عينة الدراسة من(٣٢) طالبة مقيدة بالمستوى الرابع في تخصص اللغة الانجليزية واساليب تدريسها بكلية التربية في جامعة الاقصى بغزة، وتم تقسيمهن عشوائيا إلى مجموعتين (ضابطة وتجريبية). اعتمدت المجموعة الضابطة على الطريقة المعتادة في أدائها، وهي تعليقات المشرفين فقط، بينما استخدمت المجموعة التجريبية استراتيجيات التدريس التأملي في فترة التربية العملية (2) حيث تم تدريب المجموعة التجريبية على استخدام استراتيجيتين للتدريس التأملي وهي: المذكرات اليومية، وملاحظة الزملاء أو الرفاق. ولقد تمت الاستعانة في هذا البحث بوسائل جمع البيانات وهي: قائمة ملاحظة بممارسات وأداء التدريس الصفي، ومقياس (متدرج) لتحليل وتقدير استراتيجيات التدريس التأملي. تم تحليل البيانات كمياً وكيفياً. واستخدمت الدراسة الإحصاء الوصفي (المتوسطات، والانحرافات المعيارية، والتكرارات، والرتب، والنسب المئوية واختبار "ت" في تحليل البيانات. ولمعرفة حجم التأثير الناتج عن استخدام استراتيجيات التدريس التأملي (المتغير المستقل) على الأداء الصفي للطالبات المعلمات (المتغير التابع) تم الاستعانة بمربع "إيتا". أظهرت نتائج الدراسة اهم ممارسات الأداء الصفي التي تحتاجها الطالبات المعلمات داخل الغرفة الصفية. كما اوضحت النتائج تحسنا ملحوظا في الأداء الصفي للمجموعة التجريبية. وعلاوة على ذلك، اظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية عند مستوى 0.01) ) بين متوسطي درجات المجموعتين (التجريبية والضابطة) في التطبيق البعدي لقائمة معايير الأداء الصفي ككل وفي كل محور من المحاور الستة (توجيه التعليمات، استخدام تقنيات طرح الأسئلة المحفزة، استخدام التقنيات المناسبة لتصحيح الأخطاء، تعزيز الإجابات الصحيحة، الاستخدام المنظم للسبورة، واستخدام مصادر المعلومات والوسائل المتوفرة) لصالح المجموعة التجريبية. كذلك وتوصلت الدراسة إلى وجود فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية عند المستوى بين متوسط درجات المجموعة التجريبية في التطبيق القبلي والبعدي لقائمة معايير الأداء الصفي ككل وفي 0.01) ) كل محور من المحاور الستة السابق ذكرها وذلك لصالح التطبيق البعدي. وخلصت الدراسة إلى فعالية استخدام استراتيجيات التدريس التأملي خلال التربية العملية في تحسين الأداء الصفي للطالبات المعلمات تخصص اللغة الانجليزية واساليب تدريسها. وفي ضوء النتائج التي تم التوصل إليها، جاءت بعض التوصيات ومنها: وجوب دمج استراتيجيات التدريس التأملي في برامج إعداد معلمة اللغة الانجليزية، وفي مقررات طرق تدريس اللغة الانجليزية خاصة. وأنه من الضروري أن تتعرف الطالبة المعلمة على أساليب وطرق مختلفة ومتعددة للتأمل ٠ وقد أوصت الدراسة بإمكانية تطوير أداء المعلمات أثناء الخدمة باستخدام التدريس التأملي وأنشطته، بالإضافة إلى وجوب تدريب الطالبات المعلمات على استخدام الأدوات التي تدعم التفكير التأملي.This study aimed at investigating the effect of using the reflective teaching strategies on developing the classroom performance of prospective teachers of English at Al-Aqsa University. The Quasi-experimental design was adopted. The sample of the study consisted of 32 prospective female teachers of English enrolled at the Faculty of Education – Al-Aqsa University. They were randomly assigned to two groups (control and experimental). The control group received only the traditional supervisory practices while the experimental group was trained in using reflective teaching and introduced to three different activities of reflection which were journal writing, peer observation, and five-minute papers. Research instruments were interviews, checklist of classroom teaching practices, analytic scoring rubric of journal writing and peer classroom observation. Descriptive statistics (means, standard deviation, frequencies, ranks and percentages), independent and paired samples t-test (2-tailed) were used for data analysis. The effect size "d" was computed using Eta Squared (η2). Findings of the study showed the most important classroom teaching performance and practices in classroom in light of the checklist developed for that purpose. The results also demonstrated that a significant improvement  in  classroom  performance  of  the  experimental  group in the post-observation. The study findings also indicate that statistically significant differences at 0.01 level were found in overall classroom performance and in six dimensions namely:  giving  effective instructions,  using  motivated  question techniques,  choosing  suitable techniques for correcting mistakes, praising the correct answers, systematic handling of the blackboard, and making and using available audio-visual aids, in favor of the experimental group. Moreover, statistically significant differences at 0.01 level were also noted in overall classroom performance and in the six dimensions of classroom performance of the experimental group, in favor of those of the posttest.  The  study  concluded  that  the  reflective  teaching  strategies  can  be  used effectively with student teachers during the practicum period. It was recommended that it should be incorporated in EFL teacher education programs, specifically in the EFL methodology course. However, student teachers should make every effort to learn more about a variety of reflective activities.  The  reflective  teaching  strategies  could  be  used  on  developing  and  improving  the classroom performance of in-service teachers as well. Prospective teachers should be trained on methods of developing reflective thinking levels

    Define colony number of subterranean termites coptotermes gstroi (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in selected infested structures

    Termites are one of the social insects living in large colonies that can cause economic loss. The objective of this study was to estimate foraging territory of infested subterranean termites on building structure. A mark-recapture study was conducted on eight Coptotermes gestroi colonies located at selected infested building structures in Penang, Malaysia. From the foraging study, the population of C. gestroi was estimated to be within the range of 106,592±6,968 to 4,185,000±2,127,328. Additionally, the foraging territory was from 13 to 300 m2 of the infested building structures. Meanwhile the maximum foraging distance was from 4 to 30 m of the infested structures. The results indicated that each of the building structures was infested by a single colony. This study also showed that the triple mark recapture technique used to estimate the population size of the termite colony was capable of providing rough estimates of foraging population of C. gestroi

    Using Subject Positioning Theory to Investigate Reading Engagement among University Students

    This study sets out to investigate the magnitude of reading engagement by technical engineering undergraduates. Purposive samples in the form of six bachelor’s degree students were chosen based on the observed active roles as class representatives and as active learners in the English course that they have previously taken. Two chapters from a compulsory textbook of a mandatory course from the undergraduates’ programme called Innovation Management were chosen to explore their subject positioning and reading engagement aspect. The undergraduates were requested to activey read, interact and scribble  notes if necessary during reading while their engagement via think aloud protocol were recorded. The recordings were transcribed and analysed for evidence of subject positioning  and knowledge processing with inter rater and expert verifications on the identified themes. The findings show that the uundergraduates actively undertake subject positioning to align and disalign with subject matter materials and information put forth by the author of the textbook as evidence of moderate to active reading engagement and knowledge processing. Input from previous reading, general knowldge, current experience and previous work experience intertwine in functioning as sources of the subject positioning and knowledge processing during the reading engagements. The findings are significant in raising awareness among educators on the need to cultivate active reading engagement and to devise training for undergraduates on strategies for active reading engagement. These recommended efforts from this study will yield great benefits for undergraduates in their learning curve at the academia.

    A real-time PCR technique in the identification of over-stunned slaughtered chicken

    Chickens were water stunned before slaughtered was acceptable in Malaysia under certain condition prepared by MAJLIS FATWA and JAKIM. However, in some country like Brunei this method was not accepted at all. Even in Malaysia, it is unlawful when these chickens were stunned over the current limit that set by JAKIM. The previous study conducted identified a candidate biomarker that suitable to be used in developing a detection method for over stunned chicken. A real-time PCR technique was applied as a detection method in this study using our identified biomarker in developing a set of specific primers. This study was conducted to observe the effectiveness of a detection method developed for identifying chicken that were stunning over the current limit allowable by JAKIM. Results of this study showed that by applying this detection method we were able to differentiate a chicken that was slaughtered according to original Syara’i method compared to the one that over stunned prior to slaughtering and also able to develop a result within 3 hours

    AbstractDengue fever is an infectious vector-borne disease in Malaysia. Descriptive spatial analysis indicated the DF infection was normally distributed in urban area. As for the environmental attributes, there was no significant difference except for the existence of abandoned houses across the study area. As for breeding index, it was found to be high in all temporal indices in the locality. However, it was noteworthy that there was a significant difference in the preferred breeding containers in all temporal risk indices. As a conclusion, the risk factors for Aedes mosquito breeding sites should be considered in carrying an effective vector control

    Di Malaysia, interaksi sosial merupakan satu cabaran dalam mewujudkan masyarakat yang bersatu padu dan membentuk perpaduan yang erat berdasarkan prinsip negara bangsa, iaitu bangsa Malaysia. Tahap kepercayaan dan interaksi sosial antara etnik merupakan satu daripada indikator untuk mengenal pasti tahap kesepaduan sosial antara etnik. Kajian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis tahap kepercayaan dan korelasinya dengan interaksi sosial yang berlaku dalam komuniti. Interaksi sosial yang mempunyai pengaruh sikap prejudis, fahaman stereotaip dan tindakan berbentuk diskriminasi menghasilkan bentuk-bentuk interaksi atau hubungan yang bersifat negatif dalam masyarakat. Fenomena interaksi sosial dalam masyarakat memperlihatkan keadaan sosial masyarakat itu sama ada mempunyai kesepaduan sosial ataupun sebaliknya. Hubungan antara etnik di Malaysia ada ketika berada dalam keadaan baik dan ada ketikanya boleh bertukar menjadi negatif sekiranya terdapat isu-isu yang melibatkan sensitiviti etnik. Tahap perpaduan sosial antara etnik pada peringkat mikro boleh diukur melalui perhubungan dan ikatan kejiranan. Semangat kejiranan yang merujuk kepada kemesraan antara jiran tetangga dan keaktifan penghuni dalam organisasi sosial pada peringkat lokal. Kajian ini bertujuan mengenal pasti interaksi sosial masyarakat yang mendiami rumah jenis pangsapuri dan perkaitannya dengan sikap saling mempercayai antara mereka. Kajian ini turut melihat dan mentafsir tahap kepercayaan dalam kalangan masyarakat, iaitu antara etnik Melayu dengan etnik Cina dan India yang tinggal dalam satu penempatan. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif bagi mendapatkan data dan menyelesaikan permasalahan kajian. Hasil kajian mendapati tahap kepercayaan antara etnik yang berlainan adalah rendah. Majoriti responden bersikap saling curiga terhadap etnik lain. Tahap kepercayaan terhadap etnik yang berbeza ini telah mempengaruhi tahap interaksi sosial antara etnik dalam komuniti yang dikaji. Tahap kepercayaan yang rendah antara etnik akan menjejaskan hubungan dan jarak sosial dalam sesebuah komuniti. Kajian ini menjelaskan bahawa perpaduan antara etnik adalah penting dan perlu diberikan perhatian oleh pihak-pihak berwajib, apatah lagi dalam pengisian Malaysia baharu kini

    Enhancing learning through cooperative learning: UTM experience

    Lecture-based classes are the predominant teaching method in all levels of education. This teaching style, undoubtedly is able to deliver knowledge to students and produce graduates. However, this teaching technique is usually unable to invoke higher level of cognitive skills. With an ever-growing volume of knowledge that must be covered in engineering education, an alternative technique must be used to enhance learning. Co-operative learning is a proven teaching technique that is able to enhance students’ learning through active learning. This technique has been widely accepted in engineering education in the United States, Europe, United Kingdom and Australia. In UTM, lecturers from different faculties of engineering implement cooperative learning in their classes. The main aim is to induce better retention, in-depth understanding and mastery of knowledge among students. This paper shows how cooperative learning successfully enhance students' learning by looking at the performance of their grades in different engineering classes
